WakeState

A private wake-state journal for people with narcolepsy. Check in, log naps and cataplexy, see the shape of your days.

Narcolepsy shows up as sleepiness, fog, cataplexy and naps that are hard to recall at an appointment. WakeState gives you a 30-second check-in and event logs, so the patterns are visible before you talk with your care team.

What this project demonstrates

Product move

Designed a health journal that keeps the data on the phone and the judgment with the care team.

Health UX · privacy by architecture · non-diagnostic product framing · store launch

Constraint

Nothing in the app may look like a diagnosis, and a check-in has to fit into a sleepy 30 seconds.

Inside the project

  1. 01

    Check in, about 30 seconds

Five quick scales for how awake you are, plus last night’s sleep as a rough snapshot.

  2. 02

Log naps and cataplexy as events

Planned or unplanned, refreshed or not, severity and trigger. Logged as they happen, not as sliders.

  3. 03

    See the shape of it

Patterns by day, week, month and year, then a readable summary to bring to your care team.

What to know before starting

WakeState is a personal journal, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat or give medical advice. Your journal stays on your phone with no account and no upload, and it is not encrypted by the app, so export a backup to keep a copy. Android is in Google Play review.
